Here is a dialog from the play.

WENDY
Why won't you fight?

MATT
Medic isn't any safer.

WENDY
I didn't question your manhood. You have a reason.

Matt sets bowl on ground and looks at Wendy. Wendy glances down at him then turns back to her work.

WENDY
It's none of my business. But I am interested.

Matt decides all at once.

MATT
I'm surprised you don't already know I was raised a Relative.

Wendy's hands stop mid-air before they resume polishing rifle bolt.

WENDY
What does your family think?

MATT
I'm dead to them.

WENDY
Oh.

MATT
If they could lay hands on me I'd be literally dead.

WENDY
Seriously?

MATT
That's funny considering how serious you must be. Those aren't windmill parts you're working over.

Wendy's hands undergo another, though briefer, pause.

WENDY
Sorry. Wasn't really thinking about what's going on.

MATT
Wish I could ever stop.

WENDY
So you're a convert.

MATT
A friend of mine was as loyal a Relative as you could imagine. One day the authorities arrested him for murder. A crazy charge against so harmless a man. Turns out the crime had actually been committed by the son of a high official. My friend was set up to take the fall for the offspring of power.

WENDY
What happened to him?

MATT
They hung him.

WENDY
No!

MATT
Nothing to be done. For a while I considered shooting the official's son. I eventually realized that would be pointless. Petty vengeance would do nothing for my friend.

WENDY
But still!

MATT
The more I thought about it the more I realized nothing in my Relative philosophy could call what these people had done "evil". At most it might be labeled a crime.

WENDY
Since the legal system did the deed, that possibility was, to say the least, unlikely. They'd not indict themselves.

MATT
In the Relative world right and wrong is determined by courts. Courts more corruptible than I imagined. But what would a Relative object to? Authorities deemed the official's son more important than my friend. Just a material utilization evaluation. Perfectly reasonable.

WENDY
That had to cut out your heart. To know your standards could not condemn injustice!

MATT
That certainly broke the spell. Would that it had not taken anything so horrible. Well, I couldn't live that life any more. For me Relative beliefs are more dead than my friend.

WENDY
So your family completely rejects you?

MATT
Not that they really have a choice.

WENDY
Because?

MATT
Were they to even hint they endorsed my defection, they would doubtless be killed as traitors.

WENDY
You wouldn't think it of someone polishing her rifle for a war, but I'm shocked.

MATT
Be glad you're not immured to it.

WENDY
So your family only rejects you because they'd be punished if they didn't.

MATT
No no no. They hate me. They want to kill me. They wish I'd never been born.

WENDY
How can they be so heartless?

MATT
They're true believers in the Relative cause. To them I'm a traitor and disgrace to the family.

WENDY
Have Truthers ... have we been more accepting?

MATT
Beyond not killing me? Not much. Most are convinced I'm a spy. Seems every time I look up someone's watching, poised to denounce me. The hate from both camps is tangible.

WENDY
Your refusal to fight feeds that prejudice.

MATT
I won't kill to prove my integrity.

WENDY
Guess I hadn't thought about it quite that way.

MATT
No reason you should. Anyway, as a man between worlds, both of which would like to see me vanish, my hands will not be used to send anyone into the afterlife.

WENDY
Now that I know more, I find your stance admirable.

MATT
Do you? I don't. What else am I to do? I left everyone and everything for integrity's sake. What sort of fool would I be to sell that same integrity the moment I step into a Truther camp?
