Discovering David
© May 7, 2008, Roy Stucky

Beyond the door behind a store
Are rooms devoid of light.
While hinges rust a coat of dust
Obscures a stone of white.

A master sought what most forgot
Because it wasn't new.
A milky mass to him was glass
A vision pierces through.

Who knew the block contained
A figure to unlock?
One man alone could see
The David in the stone.

The marble speaks of granite peaks
Who hide artistic hearts.
Those peaks must grieve what masons cleave
To load their weary carts.

Who knew its veins entwined
A phantom sick of chains?
One man alone could see
The David in the stone.

The hammer blows disturb repose
When watchmen fall asleep.
The critic spied the same outside
But couldn't make the leap.

Who knew the block contained
A figure to unlock?
One man alone could see
The David in the stone.
