Song 8 - Thirty Silver Coins

© 2000, Roy Stucky and Mike Vogt

Caligula blood-spattered
Rules in China today.
They add to all their crimes
Locking Christians away.

Yet America shuts her eyes
And reaches for her pay.
Thirty silver coins
And some truth to betray.

Thirty silver coins
Sealed with a kiss.
Thirty silver coins
Bet Mao is loving this.
Thirty silver coins
Won't cover all the eyes
Sacrificed to gain that most favored prize.

Appeasers point
Engagement is the key.
Give them loads of money
And they'll set the people free.

What makes us think
They'll share our view of fate?
Embolden by appeasement
That they'll wither down the state?

Thirty silver coins
Sealed with a kiss.
Thirty silver coins
Bet Mao is loving this.
Thirty silver coins
Won't cover all the eyes
Sacrificed to gain that most favored prize.

Paranoid rulers of China
Power clutch killers of men.
Threatening all of their neighbors -
But now they won't do it again.
Modern culture makes them everybody's friend.

Thirty silver coins
Sealed with a kiss.
Thirty silver coins
Bet Mao is loving this.
Thirty silver coins
Won't cover all the eyes
Sacrificed to gain that most favored prize.
Funding stolen weapons they but barely disguise.
Thirty silver coins.

DESCRIPTION

The price for which Judas betrayed Jesus. The price for which the United States turns a blind eye to Red China's persecution of Christians. The price for which the West puts that noose around our own neck. Most favored nation indeed. There is one difference though. You can be sure Red China suffers no moral dilema of what to do with the money.

What if Red China turns out to be a mortal enemy? Surely this must be conceded as a possibility. What would we then be able to do? In 2007, the U.S.A. is already so dependent upon Red China that when the numerous stories of tainted products broke, we learned it was already impossible to even define the level of Red China's involvement in our economy, let alone inspect their products, let alone actually regulate the trade.

Does it seem wise to become even more dependent? To give a totalitarian state still greater power over us? At least when we went to war against the Axis they were not intertwined in our economy. Does ownership of this sort of power over us seem likely to intimidate or to embolden Red China's desire to be a (if not the) world power?
