With a list of my questions
On what's right and what's true,
On my march to the temple
Not a soul was in view.
Once I stood on the pavement
Leading up to the gate,
Resolution resolved
That perhaps I should wait.
Then without any fanfare
The great pearl swung aside.
Could the treasure I longed for
Be found waiting inside?
Every step down that passage
Drew a ghost from the floor
'Til we halted in silence
At a red marble door.
Like the quake of an aspen
In a wind you can't see,
When I stood at that entrance
My last courage left me.
Just before my retreat
Like the coward I am,
Without knowing the reason
I reached out with my hand.
At the contact I shriveled
And collapsed as though dead.
Then a voice at the threshold
Said to raise up my head.
At the wide open doorway
Stood a figure in white
With a face like a diamond
Set aflame by the light.
"Though you don't yet belong here
While your mission remains,
I'm aware of your hunger
For what Heaven contains."
"I have shown you a vision
Far beyond what you've known.
So when people forsake you,
Do not think you're alone."
"You will stand before kingdoms
I've commanded to kneel.
When they doubt your credentials
Don't forget what is real."
Then I sat up in bed
And I started to cry
At the aftereffects
Still at war with my eyes.
For a moment the temple
Was laid over my home.
Then the figure's light faded -
But I still feel the stone.
