Beyond a life what spark will last?
What has a future when we're past?
Across the ages comes the gasp
A phantom lays within my grasp.

He knew no matter how he tried
His end would not be pushed aside.
So cheating what he'd not escape
He made a place to hold his shape.

Drop by drop his melted form
Slipped away but left a hole.
Far away these hands were born
To hold this fossil from a soul.

Into the clod surrounding clay
A heart beat runes I read today.
Where others sank without a trace
This mask reminds it fit a face.

The bones he thought the earth might break
Defied the crush and left a wake.
Though thoughts seem made of thinnest stuff
Today they've proven thick enough.

Drop by drop his melted form
Slipped away but left a hole.
Far away these hands were born
To hold this fossil from a soul.

The gift of wisdom bought so dear
Anticipated many years
Before the oak rose overhead
The planter knew he'd lay down dead.

He carved as treasures far too rare
The words we'd pour upon the air.
His soul's expansion still remains
Inside the book that lights my brain.

Drop by drop his melted form
Slipped away but left a hole.
Far away these hands were born
To hold this fossil from a soul.

My sight is led beyond my gate,
My thanks arrive but far too late.
This pattern found in ancient stone
Combines with all I call my own.

Locked inside a lofty cliff
An image time forgot
Speaks to me of solid thought
And how most dreams are not.

Drop by drop his melted form
Slipped away but left a hole.
Far away these hands were born
To hold this fossil from a soul.
