Tasting the forbidden fruit of the world exacts a price the young never imagine. Here is where we learn to fear our own wisdom, because the road seemed passable when we began.

The knowledge we naturally seek does not lighten our burden. When we strive to go beyond the traditions, it is sadly common for us to start down the wrong road in search of Truth. This life is so thoroughgoingly predatory that we even prey upon ourselves. In thus shattering our own hearts, we open the way for acknowledging our need for God to make us whole. The large abusive issues of the Predator album are seen here from a personal perspective, but the character in this song is not an innocent victim.

This song is about gaining knowledge of the world through our own effort, where the counterpoint of As I Look is to be given God's perspective on the world through grace.

The dark light to which we are afraid to open ourselves hurts. This effort to get knowledge on our own is what God in As I Look calls "swords that pierce through//All you thought to believe."

"Knowing right" is being without the excuse of growing up unchurched.

"What people did" is that not everyone walked in their knowledge.

"Forbidden fruit" is all the things we know we should not do.

"Know everything" is the artistic ideal of taking in experiences. This sounds good, gathering wisdom and knowledge, 'living with the skin off'. What you don't realize going in is just what all those experiences do once they get inside you. The secret is that this ideal really means to taste pain to the dregs. And not just noble literary pain either. The end of this road is either the destruction of the soul, or bending your knee to God in admission that you cannot become who God created you to be by your own strength. Few indeed both walk the road and then bend their knee.

"Won't ruin ME" is that intelligent youth often walk into self-destructive behaviors with sufficiently unusual motives that they think their intent will shield them from the consequences.

"Waiting years" is an impatient rejection of God's way, which is seedtime and harvest. If you are not willing to plant good seed and nurture it to maturity, you can only grow weeds. I have often frustrated myself when I saw my destination and tried to leap directly there instead of walking one step at a time, maturing to the point where the destination would have meaning once I arrived.

"Then I'll let it go" is the vain idea that things are as easy to get out of as they were to get into. How many people told us that in our youth, yet how few of us listened.

"Evil knowledge" is that Adam and Eve knew good, because they walked in the Garden with God. So the knowledge they gained was of evil, of division, of being cut off from good by evil.

"Vulture's creed" is the take-what-you-want world of Predator.

I knew about transcendence before I really knew what I'd need to transcend.
