Mines where greedy metal sleeps are sick with wicked air.
Seekers step in fear of wraiths that might be hiding there.
Once before I passed this way and thought I'd never leave,
Going back a madness I could never have conceived.

Still the darkness waits to catch the next to pass its den,
Knowing not the road ahead is paved with bones of men.
I escaped this place by grace and feel the debt I owe,
Yet I fear the call's command to go back down below.

The human heart's a dark domain.
Who will face
The Secret Flame?
Our highest wisdom seeks in vain.
Who'll embrace
The Secret Flame?

I can chart a course around the pits of reeking dead,
Though I wish the task belonged to someone else instead.
Now the door's before my face, the pen is in my hand -
So I take a breath and pass into this haunted land.

Long ago with maps in tow I followed wisdom's guide,
Some who tried to tell the truth but many more who lied.
No one told me all the hidden ways I'd need to go.
Now the time has come to try to set down all I know.

The human heart's a dark domain.
Who will face
The Secret Flame?
Our highest wisdom seeks in vain.
Who'll embrace
The Secret Flame?

Here across the broken path is where a good friend fell,
There's the room that broods upon the lurking silent well.
What remains of one unknown is leering from a cage.
Lost in darkness words of sorrow stain a fading page.

Swagger proud some marched to battle deaf to what would come,
Hearing late the greater beat that sprang from fatal drums.
Others slithered timid dragging hands along the walls,
Yet their caution could not lead them through these vicious halls.

The human heart's a dark domain.
Who will face
The Secret Flame?
Our highest wisdom seeks in vain.
Who'll embrace
The Secret Flame?

Songs of hero glories past were pomped in martial shows -
Prestos played where time demanded grim adagio.
All who came here thought no foe could ever take them prey.
Now such glinting dreams are victims eaten by decay.

Every passage mapped is marked by such a heavy price.
Who can say if diagrams are worth the sacrifice?
Those who journey after me may mock the lines I draw,
Say that fear made shadows seem the cunning traps I saw.

The human heart's a dark domain.
Who will face
The Secret Flame?
The Lord alone knows your true name.
Who'll embrace
The Secret Flame?
The Secret Flame.
