"But what is this generation like? It is like children sitting in the market calling to each other, 'We have piped for you and you have not danced. We have mourned, and you have not wept.' For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say he's demon possessed. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold a drunk and glutton, a friend of rank sinners.' But wisdom is justified of her children."
Matthew 11:16-19

This is practically a definition of asylumthink.

On another level, this applies to Mirror Covenant.  We are certain to be condemned as pretentious by those who think rock music is nothing but good-times noise.  But we will probably also be mocked as ear candy by those who think the ideas and images with which we are working are intellectually lightweight.  While no derision is comfortable, our attitude is that if we are condemned by both extremes, we are probably right where we want to be.

“Approaching human beings merely in terms of techniques necessarily implies manipulating them, and approaching them merely in terms of dynamics implies reifying them, making human beings into mere things.  And these human beings immediately feel and notice the manipulative quality of our approach and our tendency to reify them.  I would say, reification has become the original sin of psychotherapy.  But a human being is no thing.  This no-thingness, rather than nothingness, is the lesson of existentialism.”
Viktor Frankl

"Judge not by appearances, but judge righteous judgment."
John 7:24

"The bureaucrat is a man who administers things and people, and who relates himself to people as to things."
Erich Fromm

(italics in original)

"To the pure all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure, but even their mind and unconscience is defiled."
Titus 1:15

"In a free government the security for civil rights must be the same as that for religious rights."
Federalist, Number 51

Note the phrasing. The scope of civil rights is derived from that of religious rights. Clearly, religious rights are not inferior to civil rights, but are in fact their predecessors. What a firestorm of protest would be raised if civil rights were restricted as religious rights are now! Would the ACLU accept a separation of speech and state? Do they sue a school being used to stage a play by Mark Twain? What if I am a citizen who is strongly opposed to this man's works, and my taxes are being used by the school to purvey speech with which I do not agree? Does that give me the right to shut the play down? But if the play is Christian, such force suddenly becomes acceptable? The Constitution was framed from the view that verbal expression is as inalienable as religious expression, not the other way around.
