Song 2 - The Great Firewall |
© 2007, Roy Stucky and Mike Vogt
When Russia collapsed beneath bumbling debt
Red China knew markets posed a real threat.
Collectives and communes brought on defeat.
The war would be fought where Wall meant a street.
You're free to make cash as long as they rule
Your load in the role of two legged mule.
Permission to think's not quite what they meant.
The cyberspace line defines truth's extent.
The Great Firewall
Is very tall
And stretches every day.
Barbarian truth's
Getting long in the tooth
And must be kept at bay.
When Great Firewall fails
They resort to old jails
To keep the hordes away.
The Great Firewall
Is very tall
And stretches every day.
Choose for you
What is true.
Never show
What's below.
Don't think you're permitted to think on your own.
The new leap ahead is chained to their stone.
Since words are now crimes machines can erase,
Their burning of books has spread into space.
Your wallet's the only thing they have freed.
The Chairman will choose the words you can read.
Electronics feed a feudal estate
Where freedom deferred is centuries late.
The Great Firewall
Is very tall
And stretches every day.
Barbarian truth's
Getting long in the tooth
And must be kept at bay.
When Great Firewall fails
They resort to old jails
To keep the hordes away.
The Great Firewall
Is very tall
And stretches every day.
All you see
Is debris.
Made of clay
Yet today.

DESCRIPTION
Red China operates the largest censorship machine in the history of the world. That system of thought control, paid for by their vast trade imbalance with nations like the United States, flies in the face of the often touted effects of commerce and technology on the flow of information. This is especially evident in the fact that Western technology companies have been so easily bought. The leaders of Western business sold their lauded support of freedom of information in far less time than it has taken you to read this. Makes one proud.
"Debris" is that only the leftovers of information with which the tyrants were comfortable are available to the citizens of Red China.
"Made of clay" ties to the 'terracotta army'. There are indivdualized faces among the statues, but they are buried in the earth for the pleasure of a dead tyrant.
