Song 9 - The Nail

© July 21, 2007, Roy Stucky and Mike Vogt

You'd think that a billion could topple so few.
You'd think that until you had thought it all through.
A sea of inertia holds back the high tide.
No liberty lives for which no man has died.

If you wonder why most won't make a sound -
The nail that sticks up gets hammered down.
It's the fear very few can ride around -
The nail that sticks up gets hammered down.

When crowds on all sides press from cradle to grave,
The man who stands out has a need to be brave.
Then stir in the spies of the secret police,
Denouncing their neighbors through gossip with teeth.

If you wonder why most won't make a sound -
The nail that sticks up gets hammered down.
It's the fear very few can ride around -
The nail that sticks up gets hammered down.

DESCRIPTION

As you might guess, the refrain is from a proverb. It is especially true in a Communist nation, where difference is deliberately rooted out to prevent the rise of potential 'counterrevolutionary' leaders. Classic Communism operates on a cell system so that you create a legion of little Stalins who seek opportunity to poison one another. People are afraid of denounciation, so much so they keep their thoughts private even from their spouse and their own children. If you are afraid to resist the government in your own living room, you are hardly likely to gather even a disorganized following.
