The hunger for what's solid
And worthy of our praise
Has grown into a famine
Revealed in fad and craze.

We raise them on a pedestal
So high above our head.
But lest they go to changing -
We like our heroes dead.

Since everything our hands can touch
Has caught the same disease,
Corruption tears down anything
We think will finally please.

A human is too messy,
We love the myth instead.
So rather than the living -
We like our heroes dead.

Set 'em up and knock 'em down
And shuffle through their face.
Change around the fashion 'til
The grave sorts out their place.

Secretly we long to find
Our destinies have mixed.
They must do what we cannot
And stand forever fixed.

The saddest form of worship
For the life we wish we'd led
Evokes this strange perversion -
We like our heroes dead.
