I wish I was sitting on a lighthouse ledge
With the sea at my feet and the stars at my head.
Such travel might take me right up to the edge
Of perceiving the meaning in books I have read.

Perhaps then
I'd understand that far look in your eyes.
Perhaps then
We'd see each other stripped of all disguise.
Perhaps then
You'd open up and let me touch your soul.
Perhaps then
We'd find the way to make each other whole.

I wish my face was handsome so you'd want me standing near
To wrestle with the sorrow 'til we've made it disappear.
But now you look right through me as you pass and walk away.
I wish that I was clever so I'd find the word to say -

To make you stay.

Perhaps then
I'd know the way to give you what you need.
Perhaps then
My stupid steps would learn just how to lead.
Perhaps then
Our longing hearts would finally join as one.
Perhaps then
I'd be the man you hoped that I'd become.

I always hoped to find a love who'd need what I could give,
Until the wall between came down to free this fugitive.
My mirror laughs at all my dreams and shows instead my face.
How could it be this hollow fool will ever hold a place -

Time won't erase.

Perhaps then
The mystic call would bring me more than pain.
Perhaps then
You'd feel respect instead of this distain.
Perhaps then
The words I write would not embarrass you.
Perhaps then
Our love would not be haunted by taboo.

I wish I was sitting on a lighthouse ledge
With the sea at my feet and the stars at my head.
I wish I could see how we're to share a pledge
When the longing is carried in words left unsaid -

Our hanging thread.
