This lyric was written in September of 1987 by Roy Stucky.

The song was set to music in 1994.

I'd seen the Vietnam Memorial in dozens of photos, but always close up. Then I saw The Wall in a long shot during a newscast, with the bright sun shining, and was struck by how big it is. In the center it is literally too tall to "see over". That image of The Wall as a barrier connected to its color, and then to its being composed of names given by mothers and fathers with the intention of representing living, not dead people.
